What $10 Will Get You at Goodwill

As I mentioned earlier this week, our Goodwill has a Color of the Week sale.  This means that any clothing items with a color of the week tag cost $1.  This week, the color is orange.

This is what we were able to get for under $10.

Not too shabby!

It's New to Me No. 2

Goodwill Hunting - Color of the Week Sales

We do most of our thrifting at our local Goodwill store.  A lot of Goodwill stores run a "Color of the Week" sale.  At our store, with this special, clothing with the color of the week tag, is $1.  Today, we were able to get to get two pairs of Old Navy of jeans for $1 each.

Sometimes they'll have a sign on the door or in the front of the store that tells what the color of the week is.  If you don't see one,  ask an employee at the register if there is a Color of the Week sale (some GW's don't have these) and find out what they color is and what the sale means.  It may mean clothing is $1 or it may mean that it's 50% off.

Keep in mind that not all clothing will have the same color tag.  For example, the color of the week at our store this week was orange.  Most of the jeans have blue tags, but we found these jeans with orange tags.  You just have to look.  When you thrift, you have to do a little more work to find something than if you went to a "regular" store, but to us, that's part of the fun.  It's like a treasure hunt to find the best deal you can.

*We'd like to add that these shoes appear to have never been worn.  There is no wear on the bottom and the shoes were very clean.  We're sharing this because we realize that some people are grossed out at the thought of wearing "used" shoes.  We'd like you to know that you CAN find new or like new shoes at thrift stores.  If you are still worried about wearing "used" shoes, you should know that some shoes, like canvas sneakers can be washed in the washing machine.  For shoes that can't be washed, you can sanitize the shoes by spraying the inside with Lysol or Oust.

It IZZE What It Is

Since one of the main reasons for thrifting your clothes is to reuse and re-purpose, we'll sometimes have posts that show how you can reuse, re-purpose or upcycle an object.

The topic of this post is what you can do with all of those leftover IZZE bottles. 

Whatever you do, do not throw them in the trash.  At the very least, you should recycle them.  To find out if your town or city has a recycling program, check with your parents or google your town/city's name and your state abbreviation along with the word recycling  to see if you can access your town/city's Department of Public Work's website.  This website should give you any information they have on recycling.  Our city's site is full of information on recycling.

One of the most obvious things you can do with your empty bottles is to turn them into vases.

You can leave the label on, or remove it.  One of the cool things about the IZZE bottles is that you can remove the labels and have a clear bottle.  Just peel the label off and use some nail polish remover to remove some of the stickiness left behind.  Then just wash the bottle with some dish soap and a washcloth to remove the rest of the gunk.  To remove the stamped on bottling information, found at the base of the neck, you can either scrape it off with your fingernail or use fingernail polish on it too.

Other things you can do with empty glass bottles:

• Fill them with marbles or colored glass beads and sit them on your windowsill as sun-catcher.

• Use them as your Silly Bandz holders, if you're still wearing them.  This should keep them from getting tangled up.  If you don't wear Silly Bandz, use your bottles to hold your bracelets or bangles.

• Paint them.

There are so many other things you can do with empty bottles besides throwing them away.  Just google glass bottle crafts or empty glass bottle uses to get some other ideas.

Thrifty Threads - First Post Evah

We're a mom/daughter duo whose goal is to show tweens and teens that you don't have to spend a lot of money to look great. On our blog, we'll be showing name brand outfits that we mimic by shopping at thrift stores. We hope to encourage others to "shop green" and thrift whenever possible.

For this outfit the shirt was inspired by the Boden Autumn 2010 catalog.  Here is Boden's shirt at $48.

We paired this top with a pair of Highland Creek Chesapeake shoes and a pair of Express X2 jeans (the X2 jeans are no longer made, but we came across a new pair on ebay so we got our pricing from there)
